In his piece, Ibsen dis-covers Helene Alving’s past. We hear about the quarrels with her deceased husband and her handling of his lifestyle. How does a woman feel who has been sharing her life with a husband who was addicted to alcohol and who conceived a child with the maid in her own house? Even worse, who has been raising the result of this adultery in front of her very eyes for 18 years after the husband passed away? What if in addition to that Helene’s personality stands in marked contrast with the bigoted local mentality and she’s tearing apart between conscientiousness and libertine? How does it feel like to be in Helene’s position? Here my interpretation, translated into scene and atmosphere.
